What are the types of drama?

Etymologically, the word “drama” comes from the Greek word “draō” which means “to do or to act”. Drama is defined as a type of literature that is written for the purpose of being performed in front of an audience or a written work that tells a story through action and speech and is meant to be acted on a stage.

There are four main types of drama:Tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, and melodrama

Comedy is a type of drama that is written to be entertaining or amusing for the audience. It is a type or genre of drama that is intended to make people laugh.

Tragedy refers to a type of drama that is serious in nature and often has an unhappy ending. It is characterized by extreme suffering, disasters, sad, terrible or sorrowful events that befall a main character.

Tragicomedy is a literary genre that blends the aspects of both tragedy and comedy. It might be a tragedy that include enough comic moments that periodically lighten the mood, or a tragedy that has a happy ending.

Melodrama was originally referred to drama that included accompanying music. Now, it is referred to a play that include highly emotional situations in order to play on the feelings of the audience. In a nutshell, melodrama is a story, play, or film in which the characters show stronger emotions than real people usually do.

A Merchant and his Donkey

One beautiful spring morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt to go to the market, in order to sell the salt. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the way.

Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river. As it scrambled up the bank of the river, it noticed that the bags of salt loaded on his back had become lighter.

There was nothing the merchant could do except return home, where he loaded his donkey with more bags of salt. As they reached the slippery riverbank again, the donkey fell into the river, this time deliberately. Thus the salt was wasted again.

By now the merchant knew the donkey’s trick. He wanted to teach the animal a lesson. As he returned home the second time with the donkey, the merchant loaded bags of sponges on its back.

The duo set out on their trip to the market a third time. On reaching the river, the donkey very cleverly fell into the water again. But now, instead of the load becoming lighter, it became heavier.

The merchant laughed at the donkey and said, “You foolish donkey, your trick has been discovered. You should know that you cannot fool anyone too many times.”

A short story: The Clever Crow

It was then summer season. The day was very hot, when a crow became thirsty. He flied hither and thither in search of water. But he could not find water anywhere.

After some time, the crow came across a pitcher that was lying under a tree. He peeped into it, and found that there was water, but at a very low level, and it was not possible for him to suck it with his beak. He was disheartened. But he did not leave the place, because the presence of water in the pitcher made him eager to drink it.

The crow’s eyes suddenly fell on a heap of pebbles which were lying under a nearby tree.

A wonderful idea came to his mind that by dropping the pebbles into the pitcher, the level of the water could be brought to a higher level. So he began to drop the pebbles one by one into the picher; and finally, the level of the water was raised by the process, and and he drank it to his heart’s content.
